during a phone call, my xr screen will go dark, the phone call is still happening, but for example, if i need to get to keypad to press 1 for english, it won't come back, or want to take it off speaker phone, etc Why doesn't the phone screen stay displayed?

Are you using a cover or screen protector that can obstruct (interfere with) your proximity sensor (in the upper central area of your screen, called "notch")?
Should be this case, try removing them.
When done, restart your iPhone.

Thanks so very much, I appreciate the feedback. The case just does back and sides, but, I did have screen cover that did go over the notch. I will remove that. Thanks again, I will test it out now.
