My MacBook is becoming slow

my MACBOOK is becoming slow so i would like to run apple diagnostics in my MACBOOK but it is not running through pressing D when turning on what to do please help

Running Diagnostics but it starts Internet Recovery instead?? I pressed D on startup to run Apple Diagnostics on my 2017 MacBook Air, and now it’s been stuck on “Starting Internet Recovery” for 4 hours with no end in sight. What is going on here? Is this many hours normal? And why didn’t D begin Diagnostic testing?? Help please!
