Is there a simple way to transfer my iPhoto library over to the new photo app?

I have a very large iPhoto library and iCloud is out of the question. I have a MacBook Pro with all my music and photos stored on an external hard drive.

Currently I keep my photos on an external drive, which are all bundled into the iPhoto library file. I’ve looked at several YouTubes on the subject, but I’m not clear about one thing … when transferring photos to iCloud does the iPhoto library file simply relocate to iCloud in the same way that I moved the iPhoto library from my internal MacBook Pro disc to the external disc. I want to do the same thing with iTunes and noticed that iTunes has a similar library file so I assume what goes for photos goes with iTunes right?

iPhoto library to photos issues I have an external hard drive with thousands of pictures on it. They are stored on the external in the old iPhoto library program. we can’t look at them until they are in the new photo app. issue is when I open photos and try to transfer it trying to love all picture to my computer. is there anyway to transfer the old iPhoto library on my external to new photo app vi the external and not have to move them to my computer? not sure if that makes sense.

Assuming your external is formatted for Mac, it is easier than you think. 8^) Just launch Photos with the option key held down. From the resulting dialog choose your iPhoto Library. Photos will create a new Photos Library from your iPhoto media. Your iPhoto Library will not be changed.
