Is there a simple way to transfer my iPhoto library over to the new photo app?
I have a very large iPhoto library and iCloud is out of the question. I have a MacBook Pro with all my music and photos stored on an external hard drive.

Assuming your external is formatted for Mac, it is easier than you think. 8^) Just launch Photos with the option key held down. From the resulting dialog choose your iPhoto Library. Photos will create a new Photos Library from your iPhoto media. Your iPhoto Library will not be changed.
