iphone x bluetooth unstable connection

I recently bought my son an iPhone x. He is having problems with it using Bluetooth, specifically with his Samsung Galaxy Buds, but has also tested it with my Bose Quiet Comfort Headphones.

The bluetooth connection keeps dropping. He had no such problems with his previous iPhone SE. Is this a general problem with the iPhone X, or could it have a hardware fault?
