ipod touch not appearing in itunes?

Hi, when I plug in my 5th gen ipod touch to my 2009 macbook pro (using macOS 10.11.6), my ipod shows up as a device in photos, but, it doesn't appear in iTunes. I tried switching cables, and restarting my computer, but it still doesn't show up. I've tried it on at least 3 other computers at school, and they had no issues with it showing up in itunes. How do i fix it?
