transferring apple music to ipod nano

I have been trying to transfer the songs I've downloaded through apple music to my ipod nano 7th gen. I was able to connect my iphone and put the songs in my itunes library but I'm unable to transfer from my library to the ipod nano. Is there a way to do this or is the generation too old?
