My iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015) says it's macOS is up to date with Mojave 10.14.6 and will not allow me to upgrade to Catalina. It's clearly on the apple list of eligible machines to upgrade. Any suggestions?

The software updater is only checking for the current macOS and not looking for a macOS Upgrade.

Ultimately I resorted to recovery mode and that let me update. Control + CMD + R.
Are you getting error messages If so, what do they say?
No. It just says no updates available.
yes, that’s what I did initially. Went to apple... tried to download... says it’s not available.
Hmm... have you looked in your Applications Folder? Perhaps the Catalina Upgrade has already downloaded into your Mac's Application Folder and sitting there waiting for you to open and install it.
No. Not there. Frustrating.
Try running this command in the Terminal, then check System Preferences > Software Update and see if the upgrade gets listed. Give it a few seconds to populate.
sudo softwareupdate --reset-ignored
