How do I get my Microsoft Word documents back after upgrading to Catalina? Have I lost everything? because even after taking out a one-month trial membership for Office 365, nothing's there!

If necessary you can always revert:
Revert your Mac to a previous macOS version - Apple Support
Office for Mac running macOS Catalina
If you have Office 2011 for Mac or before WILL NOT run.
Office 2016 for Mac needs to be v15.35 or later.
The current Office for Mac; Office 365 or Office 2019 are OK with Catalina
