External DVD drive not working post-Catalina update

Not in Finder. Doesn't recognize a disk. Can eject disk from menu bar. Worked fine till Catalina...

External HD not showing up - Catalina problem? Not sure if it is coincidence or not but about the time I upgraded my Air to Catalina the external HD started acting funny. Sometimes mounting, sometimes not. Now it does not show up on the desktop. Nor in Disk Utility nor in Terminal. And it doesn't work now in my other old laptop (OS Yosemite). The cable is okay. I have tried the other USB port. And Hard Disk is selected in Finder. And if it is not a software (or Catalina) issue how can I get it to mount so that I might fix it with Disk Utility? Suggestions please?

USB / external hard drive not recognized on desktop or finder or system report or disc utility after updating to Catalina 10.15.3 Called Apple Care and they could not help after one hour of various resets.
