the connection between printer (HP Envy 5540) and Mac keeps breaking - one print command is OK but then the AirPrint connection breaks. Mac and printer both on same WiFi.

Have you tried Resetting the Printing System which is part of this Apple Document: If you can't print from your Mac or iOS device - Apple Support

Have you verified that your printer has the latest firmware update? According to the HP site the current version is 1831A and it fixed a variety of WiFi and 'user experience' issues.
