Apple Watch series 3

I don’t want my son to have a phone just yet. I was thinking about getting him a series 3 Apple Watch with cellular. Can he use it to call/text without connecting it to an iPhone?

All Apple Watches need to pair to an iPhone at least to setup. The cellular version can then make and answer calls while away from the paired iPhone but it would share the number of the paired iPhone, so in practical terms it needs to have a phone (and line) dedicated to it. That means it would be a bad idea to use your iPhone, because all your calls and messages would also go to your son’s Apple Watch.
