Brightness changing

Okay so I have a MacBook Pro with Mac OS 10.14 and the thing must be possessed as occasionally I'll notice the screen changes to near full brightness. I.e. it's changing brightness on me and... most importantly... my auto brightness is switched off! Anyone have an idea of why the brightness would change with the auto brightness switched off? Makes no sense to me.
