Mail takes up extremely small amounts of storage. The only thing you can do is to delete old mail.
Why do you think it is mail that take up a lot of storage, typically it is media such as photos, music and movies that take the most amount of storage. With those you can move the libraries (no equivalent for mail) to an external HD.
