Here's a suggestion.

All lenses including our eyes "see" circular images not rectangular ones (whether they be horizontal, vertical or square).

So what about a circular format?

We don't see in a circle, we see in an oval. You have much more side to side peripheral vision than you do up and down. 16:9 mimics how we see, but in a square frame.
