Unable to sign into iCloud Mail with newly created password.

After what seems like abortive attempts to change my Apple ID password on my iMac, I am, as yet, unable to sign into iCloud Mail, but the very same p/w has allowed me into the Apple community.

Can anyone advise e whatI might be doing wrong, in simple terms?
