Update daughter's Apple ID age in Family Sharing?

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for some advice on the correct procedure to update a family member's age.

When I first created an Apple ID for my daughter under my Family Sharing plan, I made a mistake and entered her age as 12. Her actual age is 22. I created her account when I gave her a new phone during June 2020.

Now that she is an adult, the incorrect age on the account is causing some limitations. I have tried to find a way to edit the date of birth in the Apple ID or Family Sharing settings, but it seems to be locked because the account was created for a minor (under 13).

I have all the necessary official documents to prove her correct age.

What is the official process for correcting this type of error? Do I need to contact Apple Support directly, and if so, what is the most effective way to do that for this specific issue?

Thanks for any guidance you can offer!

Apple used to severely restrict changing the age on a child account to a non-child age. Earlier versions of the article: Update the birthday associated with an Apple Account - Apple Support said this had to be done by Apple itself, or even just simply wait until the child aged to a non-child age with no option to change the age any other way.

Now Apple appears to have relaxed the restrictions and Apple’s support article now simply says, “You can edit a child’s birthday by signing in to their account on the web.” Since child accounts can only exist as part of a Family Sharing group, the Family Organizer has to change the age. The article: If you change an Apple Account to a child account - Apple Support includes a special scenario “If your account is accidentally converted to a child account”.

If you do not find changing the age on the account as simple as the articles now imply, I suggest the Family Sharing Organizer contact Apple about this. This page has telephone numbers for contacting Apple for support and service ➔ Contact Apple Support - Apple Support
