Just connected this to MacBook Pro, popped in an old cd 2002 - it is a little slow to read

Is there any firmwear update for it? seems to be BIOS update for Windows... not sure if I can run the update on Mac, or just leave it be.

ASUS would be the sole source of any firmware update for your Blu-ray burner, whether it is a Windows or Mac based updater, and what version of macOS is supported. Check with them.
Is the 2002 CD a factory-pressed CD or one someone burned on a CD writer device? Old burned disks a are not as stable as factory pressed disks. They use a thin coating into which CD writers replicate the "pits" in a pressed disk that carry the data. Once that coating degrades—and 23 years is ANCIENT—you can get all sorts of odd issues.
If the music CDs that play fine are factory as most are, that points to the 2002 disk as being close to the Pearly Gates.
