iPhone 16 Messages app icon badge

My iphone 16 stopped showing the number of messages that I have unread on the app icon, I made sure that the badges notification is turned on and that hasn't helped. I just updated to 26.1 and that didn't help. Any help would be appreciated

Refresh the unread-index (the most reliable fix)

Open Messages
Pull down to search
Type:
unread
Tap “Filters”
Choose Unread Messages
Open each unread conversation briefly
Go back to main list

Wait 5–10 seconds.

In most cases the badge counter returns instantly.
