How to fix Apple Music equalizer on iMac?

I have an M3 MacBook Air on Tahoe 26.1 and the Equalizer is completely useless now - When you turn it on it badly distorts the music even with the lower frequencies turned down. Switching away from Lossless to High Quality and restarting doesn't help. Considering the Apple Music sound quality is pretty poor on a Mac without the EQ turned on, this is a MAJOR step backward. It was working just fine for a long time and as you said, here we are again.
