experienced the same situation. can only edit on iphone and save over the icloud.
I deleted the Numbers app, force-quit the iPad Pro (iPadOS 26.1) and restarted it. Then I reinstalled the app.
I opened Numbers and the formula bar reappeared: see image 1. I closed Numbers, restarted it, and the formula bar disappeared again: see image 2. The formula bar does appear, but immediately disappears behind the "Fx" bar.
What do you mean by fx bar?
On my iPad tapping the fx icon calls up a menu explicitly designed for entering formulas.

The Formular-bar disappaers behind the bar at the bottom of a spreadsheet. See the picture below.
What happens when you tap fx?

I think it is a bug in Numbers iPadOS 26. So I will wait for an update! Thanks for your info, SGIII...!!
I am experiencing the same.
iPad M1, Numbers with or without magic keyboard - same result.
Apple pls fix it!
It pops up a list of formula categories, the formula bar stays hidden. It's a nasty little but that renders Numbers useless.
Have you noticed after you tap the fx that the menu gives functions that go into your formula. Perhaps you can make good use of that interface rather than trying to type out whole formulas in the formula bar.

I don't see what you are seeing and am not sure why you don't describe what happens when you to tap fx.
But if you're convinced there is a bug, rather than "wait for an update" you might consider reporting the bug at:
Feedback - Numbers for iOS and iPadOS - Apple
That way the Apple engineers are more likely to see the issue. This is a user-to-user forum.

I have exactly the same problem. I’ve tried to find various workarounds to no avail so far. This is a big problem for doing financial work, since I can’t tell what’s in the formula or edit it in any way. If I try to delete the formula and reenter it, that doesn’t work either. The formula window does seem to work briefly when I restart Numbers, but the problem recurs after a few edits
Yes I am having the same problem. To avoid any confusion that some have had, I am not referring to the “Fx formulas”. I am referring to creating custom formulas in a cell (ie, adding values of a bunch of cells from different tabs). When you click on that cell you should be able to alter that formula. But the bar that used to pop up showing a cell’s formula when you click on the cell is no longer there. There has been another update since it happened and it did not fix it. I agree with a previous post that this makes Numbers worthless for financial work as this is a fundamental thing that people using spreadsheets do all day long. The only workaround that temporarily worked was using it without the Magic Keyboard but that fix was only temporary. If it isn’t fixed very quickly I will have to switch back to Excel…ugh
I recently upgraded to 26.1 on my iPhone. I can get the formula bar to disappear if I rotate my phone. It flashes off then back on when I rotate it 90 degrees. If I rotate it further, the screen does not rotate but the formula bar disappears. When I rotate it back to 90 degrees, the formula bar remains missing (not always but usually). If I rotate it back to 0 degrees the formula bar returns. Or if I choose a new function, the formula bar returns.
I don't know if any of that is helpful to those having this "disappearing formula bar" problem on an iPad. I have no solutions, just this observation.
With the most recent iPadOS update, the problem is much less frequent. The formula window now disappears most commonly if I manually reduce the size of the Numbers window but reappears if I restore it to full screen. The formula bar display also seems more glitchy if I have more than one Numbers window open at the same time, but in that case it’s the function menu at the bottom that disappears.
26.2 (or the reset from installing it) fixed what I was experiencing. There is still a glitch, though. The placement of the formula bar within the rectangle/frame surrounding it changes as I rotate my phone. The formula bar is vertically centered in the frame when my phone is at 0 degrees, it is nearer to the bottom (not centered) when it is at 90 degrees, it pops back to being centered when I go past 145 degrees or so, and it will remain centered if I turn it back to 90 degrees. It will also be centered when at 90 degrees if I trash the existing formula and start a new one.
Seems to me they are being sloppy with the user interface. The made it work but it still has problems. It is disheartening to see these kinds of amateur mistakes, especially in a mature product.
