Green button resize: multiple clicks, windows expand

I like to use side-by-side documents a lot since I am in school. When I click the green button on any application to resize the window, it always takes multiple clicks to work. Or when I resize it and then drag it over, it always expands back to full screen. Whatever the previous software was a couple of years ago, it did not have this issue; it's very annoying. Does anyone else deal with this or know how to fix it?
