Right, but that still doesn't explain the battery drain because I have people using the same META apps on their phones (iPhone 12 and iPhone 12mini) with previous versions of the iOS (18.6.2 and 18.7.1) and they update their apps constantly and they don't have the same battery drain problem as I have had with iOS 18.7.2 and iOS 26 (on my other device). So, that isn't the only explanation.
I have not seen which apps are the top battery consumers on your device, I only used the Meta apps as an example because those have been commonly seen and also called out by Google on a completely different platform where iOS 26 is not even involved.
Two users are going to have a completely different Social Graph with different data points, which is why if you create a brand new account without any "Friends" and don't allow access to your Contacts, you will see very little battery drain from that app. You will see much more based on the data it has to work with depending on the app, and increases when there are other Meta apps to share that data with:
- Number of friends
- The friends of your other friends which increases exponentially to suggest friends to you.
- Contents of posts you liked
- Other users who liked your posts
- Comments made in both direction.
- Object detection analysis of photos you submit for suggestions. Post a picture of a BBQ and just wait for ads for a new BBQ to come in. They have checked your location so the retailer will be one near you.
None of this is secret information and it should not be surprising to anyone. Meta posts its advertising revenue every quarter and last quarter it was $50 billion dollars for a 26% increase over last year. Their user base did not increase that much but the value of each user due to the amount of data collected did. It is also disclosed publicly on the App Store where they are required to tell you the data they are collecting from your device. As an example, just take Instagram and look in the App Store for what is collected. You may ask yourself why that is needed simply for a photo sharing app, and you should be asking why. Multiply this with the data collected from a different Meta app and you can see how this Social Graph is built and how it can differ from each user.
