You probably don’t want to delete any Desktop icons. Doing so will place the associated file, folder or application into the trash.
Instead you should manage your desktop by placing the icons into folders. These folder may be on the desktop or nestled within other folders such as Documents, Pictures or Applications, etc.

You're welcome.
I see that you want to manage the bookmarks that you see when you open Safari on your Mac.
This is Apple's guidance for that: Bookmark websites that you want to revisit in Safari on Mac - Apple Support

Safari may show a start page by default, a ‘Home Page’ (any URL of your choosing, defaulting to a page curated by Apple), or Favorites and Suggestions as icons. You can change that in the app Settings. I have mine set to open new windows and new tabs with an empty page, as I don’t want suggestions and I have my favorites in the Bookmark menu and also in the Favorites bar (at the top, between the URL and page name), with folders of favorites, which can be activated or de-activated through the View menu.
I think Suggestions is party based on recent searches; these can be individually removed by control-clicking (or right-clicking) and then choosing ‘Don’t suggest this website’.
Favorites is a collection of sites that you have bookmarked. I have edited my fairly large collection of bookmarks into folders of bookmarks, to group them and visually compact them. This can be done through the Bookmarks menu, then Edit Bookmarks, which allows drag-and-drop, besides the other interface tools. Your visible Favorites can be a subset of your bookmarks, i.e. not all bookmarks need to be this easily accessible all the time; you can have bookmarks that are not part of Favorites.
Older versions of Safari had ‘Top Sites’ as an option for new windows and tabs. These would show miniatures of recent sites and often visited sites in a grid. Items in that grid would show a pin or an (x) in a corner when you moved the mouse pointer there. The pin would fix that site to this Top Sites page, and the (x) would remove that site from the Top Sites page. The Top Sites page could have an overflow of not-shown-pages that didn’t fit in the grid, so deleting items could make new items appear in the bottom right corner. Keep on deleting (x) until all the unwanted ones are gone.
Unfortunately, Top Sites would reset if you delete the History, bringing back some initial sites like Yelp and Yahoo, which I never visit.

Bring up the reading list in Safari's sidebar, Control (right) - click on each entry and select Delete from the contextual menu.
