Running Monterey OSAcrobat not allowing me to combine files

On Mac desktop running MACOS Monterey 12.7.4 When I open a pdf in Acrobat and want to add pages from another PDF, it freezes. Or sometimes stalls. Not allowing me to combine pages from the two pdf documents together. Any ideas why? It was all of a sudden.

There isn't enough information to be able to answer your question directly.

It sounds like Acrobat is crashing. Applications crash for all kinds of reasons.

There could be something wrong with one or other of the documents you're trying to merge, so does it happen every single time, with all documents, or only with these two specific documents?

Does it work in other apps? for example Preview has an (somewhat non-obvious) way of merging documents (use view -> Thumbnails to see the pages in your document, then you can drag the thumbnails from the first document into the second document to merge them). If it crashes here then I suspect some issue with the documents in question.

Either way, more information is needed to determine root cause vs. workaround.

As far as I can tell with Acrobat Reader 25.1.20813.0 on macOS Tahoe 26.0.1., one would need to subscribe to Acrobat Pro to merge PDF documents. Any attempt to do so in Reader simply rejects the dropped PDF on an existing PDF thumbnail back to its filesystem origin.

It certainly looks like you need a subscription to merge PDF documents using Adobe's desktop applications.

Adobe Acrobat – Combine and merge multiple files into one glorious PDF.

The page mentions starting a trial (for a paid subscription) or running a demo.

The online tool (which requires you to upload your .PDF files to Adobe's servers) might be free to use.
