Unable to transfer photos from Canon DSLR to Photos on macOS 15.6.1

I have recently taken my DSLR out of the case and used it for the first time in a couple of years. However I am now unable to transfer the files from the camera to my Photos on my Mac. The Mac does not 'see' the device as far as I can tell.

The Canon website states that there is no utility available for Sequoia 15.6.1. "This software is not supported with the operating system selected and is not available for download."

On 'Chat' with Canon it was stated that "... unfortunately, this matter requires deeper investigation ..."

Is the only answer for me to get a Card Reader, and will this definitely work?

Thanks in advance.

I never connect my Nikon directly to my Mac-- I use an SD card reader, always. (They're like ten bucks on Amazon. I carry one in my camera bag.) This probably comes from using a huge variety of early digital cameras, and having lots of trouble connecting them with different ports and different menu options and flaky connections.

Alternately, what usually worked even with cameras that wouldn't connect directly, was to use the app Image Capture that's in the Applications folder. Image Capture lets you send picture files to Finder or to Photos.

Still, I like having control over the SD card. I also keep a cloned copy of the SD Card for backup.
