Apple Log LUT (Rec.709) Download Problem

Message:

Hello Apple Team,

I am shooting ProRes Log videos on my iPhone, but the official Apple Log to Rec.709 LUT is not available for direct download from the iPhone. Many users have to find it on other websites or pay for it separately. Please provide an official LUT download option directly from the iPhone or Final Cut Pro. This will help creators achieve proper color grading without extra cost.

Using your test clip, the built-in FCP Apple Log LUT works as expected in the FCP viewer, and persists in the exported video file. See attached. In this case I exported from a Rec.709 project as H.264. It looks the same if exported as ProRes 422.

In any such case it's important to specify whether using an HDR or SDR library, whether an HDR or SDR project, and what display profile is in use. The display profile is in System Settings>Displays. There are different UIs if using an ICC display profile or the newer "reference presets" on the Apple Studio Display and MacBook Pros having XDR screens. But for each of those configurations, if the built-in FCP camera LUT is off, the FCP viewer and the exported file should look the same, and if the built-in FCP camera LUT = Apple Log, the image as seen in the FCP viewer vs the exported file should be the same.

That ungraded clip is not a very good image to evaluate such things on. An iPhone Apple Log clip of a tree outside on a sunny day will make the log vs non-log difference more apparent.

I don't have any clips recorded with ProRes in log that I can test.

I tried applying the Apple Log, and other Camera LUT to some log clip and exported, and the effect of the several LUT were present on export.

What are you exporting as? H264? ProRes? Not that it should make a diffference.

I would delete all render files, and try again.

If the issue persists, try deleting preferences.

To delete preferences, hold down command and option while starting the application and click Delete Custom Settings. The application will start with default settings and open an "Untitled" library. Adjust the settings, reopen the library you were working, and see how it works now.

Hi Luis,

Thanks for your help. I tried all the steps you mentioned — deleting render files and preferences — but the issue is still the same. The Apple Log LUT (Rec.709) is not applying correctly, and there’s no easy option to download it directly from Safari or from the iPhone.

Apple should really provide a simple download option for the official Apple Log to Rec.709 LUT, so users don’t have to search for it from other sources.

I don't know what to tell you... it appears to be working here.

Applying the LUT for me produces a significant difference, and that difference is visible in the output video as well.

Just to be sure: are you seeing the effect of applying the LUT in the timeline, but not on export?

Or it does not even work in the timeline?

Would it be possible to share a short sample clip where the problem manifests itself? You could send it to yourself using wetransfer, and post the link here (it will probably be deleted soon after, but we'll still get the link in the e-mail).

Thank you for sharing this clip.

For me, the exported file looks exactly like what is seen on the timeline.

FWIW, the image does not look that great using the Apple Log LUT, it appears too dark; I tried with no LUT, and also using Arri Log LUT, and the Arri looks much brighter.

Here is a screenshot. From left to right, using Arri Log, Apple Log, and no LUT.
