I am getting a mid-2020 MacBook Pro.

Hello fellow converts (because I know everyone (including me) has at least used some sort of Windows or Linux PC), I have come here to ask about me getting macOS 27 (when it is released) onto my mid-2020 MacBook Pro, because I cannot afford an M1 mid-2020 MacBook Pro, but only the Intel model. I know that Tahoe still has a full life ahead, but I still would like to know this for the future.

Thanks, rackers_shoot_touching.

All indications are that macOS 26 Tahoe will be the last version of the OS to support any Intel cpu based Mac.

MacOS 27 will support only the newer Macs with Apple Silicon processors.

But you can expect at least two more years of active support for Tahoe, and several after that focusing only on security.

Apple released two Intel-based MacBook Pros in May 2020:

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports)

The two-port model can run Sequoia, but cannot run Tahoe. Apple discontinued it when the 13" M1 MacBook Pro came out in November 2020 (not "mid-2020").

The four-port model can run both Sequoia and Tahoe. Apple discontinued it when 14" M1 Pro and M1 Max MBPs came out in October 2021. Apple has announced that Tahoe is the last major version of macOS which will run on any Intel-based Mac, so this model will not be eligible for macOS 27 when macOS 27 comes out next year.

Note that the Intel-based 2020 MacBook Pros are new enough to have the T2 security chip and support Activation Lock. (Mac computers with the Apple T2 Security Chip - Apple Support)

If you are thinking of purchasing a used one, make sure that the previous owner has prepared it properly for resale (What to do before you sell, give away, trade in, or recycle your Mac - Apple Support). Otherwise you may end up with a computer that you can never properly set up for your own use.

You may want to consider buying a Mac from Apple's Certified Refurbished store.

Refurbished Mac - MacBook Air - MacBook Pro - Apple

I am getting a mid-2020 MacBook Pro.
