Imac Intel model 2017 mail does not start up anymore - new pop up is coming up

On my Imac model 2017 Intel - Ventura 13.7.8 where apple mail worked 100% perfect with the different accounts on, until a few day ago. When I startup the mac and I select Mail, a new pop up comes up instead of opening the normal mail...

The new pop up says: Import Messages. When I go to start up the import, you see that he is loading all the mails income, sending.... on the different accounts.

After that all mails has been imported a new popup comes up with the following message: The import has failed. During the import an error happens. See that there is enough memory free in the home folder and try again. There is still 35 GB memory over not used.

With Time Machine I installed older version, still the same, I re-installed OS Ventura..... The problems stays there. Who can help me to solve my problem.

1. Identify the Pop-up Message

What exactly does the pop-up say? Common messages are:

  • "Import Messages" or "Mail needs to repair its information..." (This usually happens after a major macOS update or an index file corruption.)
  • "Login Failed" or "Mail requires your password" (Often happens if your email provider changed security settings, or if macOS Keychain access was reset.)
  • A message related to a specific email account (e.g., Google, Yahoo, etc., needing re-authentication).
  • An error about a corrupted file or not enough storage space (even if you think you have plenty, it can refer to a specific system partition or file).

Initial Quick Fixes (Try these first)

  1. Force Quit and Restart Mail:
    • Press Command + Option + Esc to open the Force Quit window.
    • Select Mail and click Force Quit.
    • Try opening Mail again.
  1. Restart Your iMac: A full system restart can clear many temporary glitches.
  2. Check for macOS Updates: Go to System Settings (or System Preferences on older versions) > General > Software Update. If there's a pending update, install it, as it may include fixes for the Mail app.
  3. Try Safe Mode: Start your Mac in Safe Mode (search "Start Mac in Safe Mode" for your specific macOS version). If Mail opens in Safe Mode, it suggests a third-party app, font, or kernel extension is causing the conflict.

3. If the Pop-up is "Import Messages" or "Repair"

This suggests your local Mail database is corrupted or incompatible with the current Mail app version.

  • Follow the prompt: If the pop-up gives you an option to Import or Repair, try clicking it. Even if it fails (sometimes you get an "Import failed" message), it might have partially fixed the issue, allowing the app to open.
  • Rebuild Mailboxes (If you can get it to open at all): If you can briefly open the app before the pop-up, or in Safe Mode:
    1. In the Mail app, click on a mailbox in the sidebar (e.g., your Inbox).
    2. Go to the Mailbox menu at the top.
    3. Select Rebuild. (Repeat for all main mailboxes).

4. If the Pop-up is a Login/Authentication Issue

This is very common if you use a third-party email provider like Gmail, Yahoo, or Outlook, as they often require you to re-authorize the Mail app after a security or system change.

  • Check Internet Accounts:
    1. Go to System Settings (or System Preferences) > Internet Accounts.
    2. Look for the email accounts you use in Mail.
    3. If any show a warning sign or indicate they need to re-login (e.g., "Password required"), click on the account and re-enter your password or follow the on-screen steps for authentication.
