Britbox show access in appleTV

britbox seems to be allowing access via AppleTV to only the first episode for some shows. Then forcing you to the app for subsequent episodes. Since the subscriptions (and EULA) are different, according to previous threads in this community, that doesn’t seem legit. Also … britbox just cranked their ATV subscriptions by, like, 22%. so … less access … more cost. what am i missing?

BritBox is available (in select countries) through:

  • the BritBox app, using a subscription through the BritBox organisation directly; valid on any of your devices within the BritBox app, or on the web. You would set up a special BritBox account for this method.
  • the BritBox app, using a subscription as started in-app on an Apple device, valid for any of your Apple devices within the BritBox app, but not on third party devices. This would be registered through your Apple Account. Use on secondary devices (or after reset/reinstall) may require the use of Restore Purchases option rather than sign-in.
  • the Apple TV app, as in-app channel, valid only for the Apple TV app on any platform where the full Apple TV app is available. This would be registered through your Apple Account.

Each of these has different terms and conditions, different perks and limitations, and these are as such not exchangeable (without canceling and re-subscribing).


Please specify the method of subscribing that applies to you. Please specify your country.


Select content that is available through BritBox, may also be on sale through the Apple Media Store. You would see this as asking to buy per episode, per season, or per series. Most subscribers should probably choose not to buy it, but you can if you want to keep the titles ‘indefinitely’.


The Apple TV app might be ‘confused’ when presenting the show that you intended to watch, to try to link it to your preferred content provider, as the Apple TV app on the Apple TV box can link to each of these three methods. Usually, carefully starting an episode in the intended method (not through Continue Watching) will fix any unintended/​misguided link. If not, then remove the show from Continue Watching, then start an episode through the intended method. You may find each of the available options listed under the How to Watch header for the show listing or episode listing. Please note that for ‘current’ shows, each method may have a slightly different release time/​date for new episodes, which might be a reason for the unfortunate mixup of intended content provider.

Thanks for the reply, and the clear explanation of the subscription levels. I have the AppleTV app as an in-app channel in the US.

What seems to be deliberately annoying is the up-sell to either of the other methods by BritBox (and Apple helpfully noting that they would track our watching habits regardless), leading to inevitable double payments and wasted time. Sigh.


If this is just a matter of delayed access to more episodes, then it’s bad but not horrible. If this is a sign of appleTV only carrying teaser episodes while shilling for the full app, then it’s grounds for ditching the whole channel entirely. Paying rent to access incomplete series is a waste of money, because I already get that from Netflix.
