Recommend me a best AI photo editing software for Mac

Hey folks

I'm on macOS and want a good AI-powered photo editor — something that can intelligently remove backgrounds, enhance portraits, auto-fix lighting, etc. What’s your pick for the best AI photo editing software for Mac that’s actually worth the hype? (Bonus points if it’s not crazy expensive or full of bugs.)

I vote for Luminar Neo, my favorite AI photo editing software on my mac. It is built from the ground up with AI as its core and offers a fantastic balance of power and user-friendliness.

Key AI Features: Sky AI (realistically replace skies), Portrait Bokeh AI (adds realistic depth of field), Relight AI (adjust lighting post-capture), Remove Powerlines, Skin & Face AI, GenErase (powerful object removal).

Pros: Intuitive interface; one-time purchase option; very fast and focused on delivering dramatic results with minimal effort.

Cons: Feel less "precise" than Photoshop for fine-detail work; some advanced features require separate purchases.

Best For: Hobbyists, travel photographers, and content creators who want to achieve stunning, creative edits quickly without a steep learning curve.

Pixelcut is my top choice. While primarily a web app, it works perfectly in your Mac's browser (Safari, Chrome). It's designed specifically for the "magical" AI tasks you mentioned. Its background remover is one of the fastest and most accurate free AI photo editing software for Mac available.

  • Key AI Features: One-click background removal, AI photo upscaler, photo eraser (remove objects), unblur image, portrait retouch.
  • Pros: Extremely user-friendly, incredibly fast at specific tasks, free tier is very generous (typically 40-50 free credits per day).
  • Best for: E-commerce, social media creators, and anyone who needs to do quick, powerful edits like background removal without any fuss.

If you're looking for the best AI photo editing software for Mac, Luminar Neo is a standout choice. I've been using it for a while, and it's been a game-changer. The AI tools like Sky AI and Face AI are incredibly intuitive. For instance, I recently edited a landscape photo, and with just a click, it replaced a dull sky with a vibrant sunset. The Relight AI feature also helped brighten the shadows without overexposing the highlights. You can download it directly from the Mac App Store .

Another solid option is Pixelmator Pro. It's a Mac-native app that integrates seamlessly with macOS. The AI-powered features like Smart Replace and ML Super Resolution make editing photos a breeze. I used it to upscale a low-resolution image, and the results were impressive—sharp details without any noticeable noise. It's available on the Mac App Store.

Both of these apps offer powerful AI tools that can enhance your photos with minimal effort. Depending on your specific needs and preferences, either could be a great addition to your editing toolkit.

The following are all excellent products that should meet all your requirements ...

Affinity Photo - already an excellent editor and it's about to get a big update

Pixelmator Pro

Adobe Photoshop (the Adobe Photography Plan - PS + LR - is only $20/month and it's worth it)

Also consider ...

DxO Photolab - overall super product, and its DeepPrime Noise Reduction feature is one of the best

On1 Photo

Unfortunately, much as people recommend Luminar Neo, I'd stay away from it. Skylum has a long reputation for abandoning products in favor of new ones you have to buy again and stretching out the timelines for release of promised features.

For removing backgrounds give the macOS Finder a try. Just Control (right) - click on a photo and select Remove Background from the Quick Actions menu:

It all depends on what you want to spend. Photoshop, Photoshop Elements (one time purchase), Affinity Photos (otp), GIMP (free, open source), GraphicCoverter (otp). There are so many to choose from that it depends on what you need the app to do.

What are your requirements and what Mac will you be using it on (give the specs).

Photoshop 2026 seems to work for some people on Tahoe but not others. I am certain Adobe is working on an update. For myself, I'm still running Sequoia, Sonoma & Monterey and PS 24, 25, 26 all work fine on their respective machines.

Well, PSE 2025 worked fine in Tahoe but PSE 2026 immediately crashes. I only downloaded the free trial.
