iPhone 17 Pro Max poor data connection compared to iPhone 15

My iPhone 17 Pro Max has poor data connection. Using the Field Test Mode (dialling *3001#12345#* in the phone app) reveals that the SINR values are between -30db and -20db which I understand is really bad. Compared to an iPhone 15, which has SINR of about +10db to +20db. So clearly there’s either a problem with my iPhone 17 Pro Max individual device, or the iPhone 17 Pro Max design in general.

I’ve tried getting the device replaced by Apple, which they have offered to do as they say it’s not right. But annoyingly they won’t send out the replacement device until days/weeks after receiving mine, and I need the phone every day to manage and monitor my health, which Apple Support care nothing about.

I’m wondering if my particular device is faulty, or whether all 17 Pro Max’s are equally bad.

Anybody else having a similar issue with data connection on the iPhone 17 Pro Max?

Since I moved from a 14Pro to a 17Pro, I have only problems.

Most of the time, websites, streaming, apps can't connect to the internet.

In 4G, 5G, any wifi.

Everything takes forever to load. Streaming stops after 3 minutes, you have the spinning circle (looking for internet) and then it works again for 10 minutes, and starts again.

I did everything suggested:

Reset the network settings

Reinstall iOS26 (I did both with a restore, and one out of the box without restore)

Airplane mode ON then OFF

Update Carrier settings.

Remove all VPN configs.

Delete all VPN apps.

Nothing works.

Now I know it's not my configuration since it behaves like this anywhere. In coffee shops, at work, at home, at friends, in different countries.

I have 3 different carriers, and all show the same behavior.

If it were a config problem as most people would tell you, or a hardware problem, then it would not show the same problems on my wife 17Pro, my friend's iPhones 17Pro or ProMax.

Hopefully they're going to fix this major problem in a coming patch.

The split bars still indicate weak signal, which is substantiated by your Field Test. They can also indicate it may be roaming. But the test isn’t the same between the two devices.

Are both devices on and next to each other when testing? Have you tested 5G and if so what do the field tests show. Have you run the Speed Test app or equivalent in UK? If so do you have screenshots?

You don’t show the results for the other device. If you want to pursue this with Apple Syupport it’s certainly your prerogative. You want to have Apple perform diagnostics on your iPhone. It can be done in person at an Apple Retail Store or at an Apple Authorized Service Provider. You can also contact Apple Support and request remote diagnostics.

I don’t think your graphs and tests are very scientific. Speed tests at random times as the signal measurement are meaningless. Not being connected to the same channel is a huge issue in testing. I’m not saying there isn’t an issue, just nothing you’ve shown is an equal comparison. I see flawed testing and you see a flawed device. Time to let the manufacturer run diagnostics and determine if you have a defective device. Good luck!

Not quite the same numbers as I quoted above as didn’t get screenshots of those, but here’s when I did another test with the same O2 physical SIM card, testing it in both the 15 and 17 Pro Max. Indoors this time.

15 with much higher SINR numbers, which was reflected in the ability to use the internet when WiFi was disabled, whereas 17PM could not use internet without WiFi.

btw this speed test wasn't at the same time as the other tests. When I've done speed tests before I've had something like 20% packet loss.

It seems to me that the source of the problem is the low SINR (high noise and interference) as my original screenshots show that as the only massive difference between the 17PM and the 15.

The split bars change to one set of bars if I disable one of the lines (disable one of the eSIMs) and the number of bars shown also reflects the signal strength for each line which can be seen when you show control centre.

At the time of the tests, only one device is on at a time, sat next to each other when testing.

I think they’re both set to 5G Auto but probably not in a location where signal is particularly strong.

Thank you for your assistance, but as said in my original post, I've already gone through it all with Apple Support. They suggest replacing the device but aren't sure if it'll fix it, which isn't very helpful. So as said in my original post, I'm curious to see if other people experience similar symptoms with lower SINR values on the 17 Pro Max compared to the 15 (or any recent base model iPhone) in the same location etc, or whether mine is unusual.

If other people are experiencing something similar with the 17 Pro Max then I probably won't go through the aggravation of replacing the device.
