iPhone 17 FaceTime back camera 0.5x doesn't work

I purchased new iPhone 17 few days ago and while on FaceTime call, I realized 0.5x doesn't work when you switch the camera. Seems like a software issue according to Apple support. Is anyone else having similar problem?

According to Reddit, it only works if "you change to the selfie facing camera during a FaceTime call and set it to Center Stage mode, flip back to forward/front facing cameras, then it allows you to do .5x zoom."

I tried it (iPhone 17), and it works. But I'm not sure why Center Stage mode is the only way to get 0.5x.
