Depends on what you are using it for.

I still have a iMac G4/800 – a PowerPC-based Mac with the "iLamp" design – sitting on my desk. It still works, and I can use it to run old games, or import digital video over FireWire from a MiniDV camcorder, or make use of an old slide and film strip scanner. Its classic design adds to the decor of the room even though I only fire it up once in a blue moon.

I'm not throwing that machine away – or even recycling it. But the days of browsing the Web with it, or running current applications on it, are long over.

Your 2006 Mac notebook is something like 19 years old. That is very old in computer terms. 2006 is when Apple was just changing over from PowerPC CPUs to Intel CPUs. We are now several years into the Apple Silicon era. macOS 26 Tahoe is the last major version macOS that will run on any Intel-based Mac, and only a few Intel-based Macs can run it. It's long past time to upgrade.

Comparing entry-level machines …

MacBook (13-inch) [May 2006]

  • 32-bit, 2-core, Intel Core 2 Duo processor (1.83 GHz or 2.0 GHz)
  • Maximum of 2 GB of RAM
  • 60 – 120 GB, 5400 rpm mechanical hard drive, in a bay with a 1.5 Gbps SATA-I interface (not SATA-II or -III)
  • USB 2.0 and FireWire 400
  • 13.3" screen with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels
  • Supports one external display with a maximum resolution of 1920x1200 pixels using Mini-DVI
  • Cannot run anything higher than Mac OS 10.6.* (Snow Leopard). The 32-bit processor would have been one reason for this.

MacBook Air (13-inch, M4, 2025)

  • 64-bit, 10-core, M4 (Apple Silicon) processor
  • 16, 24, or 32 GB of RAM
  • 256 GB – 2 TB SSD
  • USB-C (USB 3.1 Gen 2, USB4, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt 4)
  • 13.6" screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1664 pixels
  • Supports two external displays with maximum resolutions of up to 6K, using USB-C and Thunderbolt.
  • Can run the latest version of macOS – macOS 26 (Tahoe)
  • Supports Apple Intelligence

So, just a few changes over the years.
