ms word "save as" PDF not working

After the update to Tahoe today, I am not able to save a .docx file as a .pdf file, it throws an error "not able to save as xxx.pdf" and when I want to print the document nothing happens, not even the printer dialog box comes up.

Try updating your printer drivers after the Tahoe update. For now, you can use Print and select Save as PDF instead of Word’s “Save As” PDF option. Make sure your MS Word is properly licensed and signed in if required.

Are you using the current version of Word (16.101.3)? Running that on Tahoe, using Save As... and selecting PDF works for me on Tahoe 26.0.1.

Note that there are two options with radio buttons, 'best for printing' and 'best for electronic distribution'. @KiltedTim, the second one of those is one reason the Save As PDF option is necessary for some people. With that option, for example, if you have a ToC or index in the document then the entries in it are live links within the PDF document, not the plain text you get with Apple's PDF engine via the Print dialog. Personally, I pass on that option in Word because it routes the file through Microsoft's servers and thus when I select that option I get this:

After hitting Cancel, then I get a popup that the document could not be saved.

Save as PDF is completely unnecessary.

You can print to pdf from an application in macOS.

Can you print from any application?

What version of Word/office do you have? Do you have a MS 365 account or did you install a standalone version of office.

If you downloaded the MS Word app from the App Store, you can't print or save unless you sign in with your MS account linked to a valid subscription.

There is nothing new in Tahoe that prevents a currently licensed and properly installed Word (e.g. v16.101.3) from Office 2021 or 2024 for Mac from opening a DOCX and selecting Save As… to PDF. I just did that without fanfare.

Otherwise, what KiltedTim has shared.

Printing may require you to update your vendor print drivers for Tahoe, or remove and reinstall the AirPrint printer (if you were using AirPrint).
