Is it safe to use macOS Big Sur for browsing?

Hi All,

Is it safe to use macOS Big Sur for browsing? I already have Norton 360 Deluxe so I install it in my MacBook Pro Mid 2014. I want it just for opening websites and watching YouTube. And I'm using different Apple ID than my main ID. Hope to here from Apple Support Specialists.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.7

just practice safe computing habits and you should be fine.

an excellent user tip to read is Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community.

FWIW, you should completely uninstall Norton. it, and any similar apps, are infamous for causing major issues within macOS while providing ZERO protection or benefit.

Hope to hear from Apple Support Specialists.

this is a user to user community. the only people here that work for apple are only looking for violations of the terms of use of the community.

Big Sur doesn't receive current versions of Safari. Neither do most major third-party browsers – they now require Monterey.

There are two that will run on Big Sur.

  • Firefox requires Catalina or higher. (Firefox 115 ESR, which doesn't have all of the latest features, runs on Sierra, and is still getting "critical security updates" until February 2026. That suggests that there will be some version of Firefox that runs on Big Sur, and receives security updates, for at least the next few years.)
  • Opera requires Big Sur or higher.

You may want to grab one or both of them.
