Airpod Max on but not ON

My headphones are connected to my phone, shows me the battery and that they’re connected but they’re not on? I put them on and they’re just off, not even transparent and the buttons don’t respond and I can’t get them to work normally. I’ve cleaned them, charged them, reset them a dozen times at this point and they’re still not working.
