Delayed response typing on iPad Pro in Mail app with iPadOS26

In the Mail app on my iPad Pro (M4), since updating to iPadOS 26 and iPadOS 26.0.1., there is a significant response delay when tying in the Mail app. I type and nothing happens for a second or two, and have to start again. I have not been able to remedy the issue.
