Thieves steal cards from racks, open them up and copy the redemption codes. Then they seal the card back together and return it to the store. You buy the card and the store activates it. The thieves then redeem the card before you can and you are left holding the bag. If this is what happened then there’s not much chance of getting your money back. Many stores now keep Apple gift cards behind the counter to prevent this scam.
