I don't use a password to access my Mac Pro. The new Tahoe update requires a password to restart, update now and update tonight.

You do have a password. It's likely that you set your Mac up to log in automatically at some point in the past.

You will need the password you created when you set up your user account on the machine.

System security overview

Excerpt from above link

By virtue of some of the key points in below

It would seem not possible to just hit the return key during the Setup Assist process

" Building on the unique capabilities of Apple hardware, system security is responsible for controlling access to system resources in Apple devices without compromising usability. System security encompasses the boot-up process, software updates, and protection of computer system resources such as CPU, memory, disk, software programs, and stored data.

The most recent versions of Apple operating systems are the most secure. An important part of Apple security is secure boot, which protects the system from malware infection at boot time. Secure boot begins in silicon and builds a chain of trust through software, where each step is designed to ensure that the next is functioning properly before handing over control. This security model supports not only the default boot of Apple devices but also the various modes for recovery and timely updates on Apple devices. Subcomponents like the Secure Enclave also perform their own secure boot to help ensure they only boot known-good code from Apple. The update system is designed to prevent downgrade attacks, so that devices can’t be rolled back to an older version of the operating system (which an attacker knows how to compromise) as a method of stealing user data. I went to recovery and chose to reinstall Tahoe. After it was installed it showed that Tahoe 26.0.1 was installed. Still don't have a password to access my computer. I just hit enter when the password widow came up.

AFAIK and perhaps my colleague( s ) can put this right 🤞

To have an account On The Computer would Require a Password

This is part and parcel of the Security of the Computer which Apple Is very very strong on keeping Secure

There are some who Claim that No Password is possible.

But, I have yet to see reproducible / tangible evident that could be replicated and repeatable / on a consistent basis

How did the User ( you ) log into this computer in-order to reach this point where the Computer Password is required for this update / upgrade

Perhaps then we might truly understand this situation

Your right Apple is not very smart. I've had a Mac since 1989. Never has Apple said to save your password to access your Mac. There was no prompting to save the access when Apple installed software that allowed the user to select no password when accessing your computer. Not Smart Your Right!!!

The first Uniix-based Mac operating system, Mac OS X 10.0 ("Cheetah"), came out in March 2001 – more than 24 years ago. Unix systems make use of user accounts and passwords.

So don't pretend like passwords are something new on the Mac, or like the need to keep track of the password to an Admin account is something new.

Here is how I correct my computers. I never said that i didn't have a password.

If You Don't Know Your Password

Go to systems and select Touch ID & Password

Click on Change Password

Old Password-----Leave it Blank

New Password----Type in your new password

Verify-------------Type in your new password

Password hint-----Type in hint

Place Cursor in Old Password field and hit Return or Change Password

I did this on 2 Mac Pro's and an iMac and they now work with the new password.
