I will be reading a newsmag on Safari when the window freezes. Clicking on stories does not open their pages.
But if I open a new Safari window and go to the same site, the page works. So I will see two identical pages side by side, one dead and the other live. Why?

It is hard to say "Why" without doing some digging.
1) If you are still running macOS 15.6 Sequoia and Safari 18
You should update the iMac to macOS Sequoia 15.7 and Safari 26.

2) Then if you are still having an issue after updating to Sequoia 15.7 and Safari 26.

If that doesn't work, then you probably have some third-party AV-ware or a VPN that is blocking the iMac's ability to update.
Am running Safari 18.6 and Sequoia 15.6.1. Software Update had not offered me 15.7, but I see it’s available and will install it. Also saved the Entrecheck links and will use it if the problem happens again.
No problem with updates. But Software Update did not notify me with red dot that 15.7 was available. I saw it after I opened SU.
