An error occurred during authentication iMessage

Hi, both of my MacBooks (running Catalina) are not allowing me to use iMessage, requiring me to sign in to iMessage, and then responding with a message that says an error occurred during authentication. I have tried everything to fix this, including signing out of iCloud, rebooting, signing back in, etc. I am at my wit's end after spending several hours on this. Anyone have a solution?

You already did everything reasonable and I'd be at my wit's end too. Before contacting Apple, try doing the same thing with FaceTime. In other words open FaceTime's Settings (or Preferences) and Sign Out. Sign in again using the same Apple Account credentials you use for iMessage. Yes I know the two should not be related to one another, but I recall having the same problem with an older operating system; perhaps it was Catalina. I had to sign out of everything and sign in again.

If that doesn't work contact Apple: Official Apple Support. See if you can get past their perfunctory "Catalina isn't supported any more, go buy a newer Mac" and speak to someone motivated to help you. Let us know what they have to say.
