Download earlier macOS via web browser?

Hi all,

I've fallen behind in my macOS updates (I know, I know), and am trying to update from Big Sur to Monterey (and I'll update onto Ventura from there, and so on and so forth, etc).

I've tried going through the App Store, but when the Software Update window pops up it just gets stuck on the "Finding Update..." part.

Is there anywhere I can just download Monterey directly via my web browser?

Thanks in advance.

You can find links to various macOS installers in the following Apple article:

How to download and install macOS - Apple Support

FYI, you should be able to just upgrade from Big Sur to Ventura.

As always, make sure to have a good backup prior to making any changes.....although you should always have frequent & regular backups.

No, you cannot download current versions of macOS from the internet.

The App Store has had ongoing performance issues that prevent your upgrade. Check Apple - Support - System Status to check status of App Store. You could try updates from Settings but that might not work. Also try installing macOS from macOS recovery. I recommend checking status of App Store every day or so.

Yes you can. Apple documents the procedure here -> How to download and install macOS - Apple Support It does link to the App Store ... and I have had no problems downloading installers from the App Store.

Also, for users who already have Monterey or later versions of macOS, they can download directly via the Terminal using the softwareupdate command.

  • softwareupdate --list-full-installers will yield a list of available macOS installers for the machine making the request
  • softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version x.y.z will retrieve the specified installer

For my 2019 i9 iMac the available installers go all the way back to Mojave.

By “downloading from the internet” I mean going to a website and downloading the installer as a file, which cannot be done for updates past OS X El Capitan. I did not mean App Store downloads, though yes you can do those (Though as I said the App Store has had performance issues)
