Missed Automatic Upgrades from Ventura 13.4.1

My 2021 M1 MacBook Pro is working fine but I just saw a note when paying a utility bill that my Safari 16.5.2 browser is out of date. Why? I realized my "Automatic Updates" was disabled as I am still running Ventura 13.4.1 and never upgraded to Sonoma 14, Sequoia 15, and now Tahoe 26 is showing as the next update available. I read somewhere that jumping from Ventura directly to Tahoe might be a problem and a very long update. Now I'm scared! Is there a way to update from Ventura to Sonoma first? Then from Sonoma to Sequoia? Then I may want to wait to jump to Tahoe 26 until the bugs are worked out. Help? I am not techie.

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 13.4

Many vendors get too aggressive about the browsers & browser versions they support.

While there are later versions of Safari on Sonoma, Sequoia & Tahoe, you could just opt to use a different browser. I suggest Firefox. I have used it for many years and have never run into the kinds of "out of date / don't support it" that you reported with your utility provider.

If you really prefer to upgrade your version of macOS in order to get Safari 17 or 18, you can in fact just upgrade to Sonoma or Sequoia. You can get either version of macOS by following the App Store links in this Apple Support article -> How to download and install macOS - Apple Support

I am running Sonoma & Sequoia on different Macs and they both work fine. But I would hold off re: Tahoe for the time being.

FYI, you should be able to go from Ventura to Tahoe if you wanted, but I would resist that urge for now & wait for at least the first or second update patch to Tahoe. Besides you need to do some research to make sure all of your third party apps are fully compatible with Tahoe.....sometimes it may take developers weeks or months, sometimes a year before their apps are fully compatible with a new OS.

You would be better off directly upgrading to Sonoma or Sequoia for now. If you upgrade to Sequoia directly, then you spare yourself two upgrade cycles. Another advantage of going with Sequoia is you will have fewer update patches to worry about.

FYI, I tried out a clean install of Tahoe on a test machine and I must say I will be upgrading to Sequoia instead of Tahoe (I don't even like Sequoia or Sonoma). The extreme rounded corners in my opinion are ridiculous and there are some aspects of the translucent interface that you cannot get rid of so you will see some awful overlaps for anything that scrolls beyond view. I suggest you look at some of the hands on reviews & screenshots before jumping into Tahoe since it will look a lot different than even Sequoia.

macOS is not supposed to automatically upgrade you to a new major version of macOS (I have heard it happens once in a while, but that should be rare). If System Settings is on your Dock, then you should see a red area alerting there is some notification....usually related to software updates.

Before you upgrade macOS to a new major version, make sure you have a good backup.

Thank you, Martin! I am definitely holding off on Tahoe but I did see how I can go from Ventura to Sonoma first. Most likely after I do that, it will allow me to jump to Sequoia. I did a full backup on Time Capsule so I should be good there. I wound up using Google to pay my utility bill, but finding out my Safari browser is only 16.5.2 versus 18.6 as the latest had me questioning all of this. Thanks again!
