Moving a Time Machine from a Time Capsule drive in preparation for the discontined support of Time Capsul over network backups to Time Machine Do I need to do a complete base Backup to the New Drive or can I move the old Time Machine file from the Time Capsule drive.

Copying Time Machine data has always been frowned on, because of the possibility of introducing new errors that would invalidate the backup set.

You can remove the SATA drive from the Time Capsule and place it in an external enclosure, and keep using it that way if you like.

The part that is being deprecated is Apple File Protocol (AFP) -- the Protocol for talking to the Backup Destination in the Time Capsule.

The drive data format is still perfectly acceptable.

Not a great idea in my experience to try to manually copy / paste a Time Machine backup file from a Time Capsule drive to another drive.

Better plan..... do what Apple recommends for this purpose and connect a USB drive to the USB port on the back of the Time Capsule and use the Archive function in AirPort Utility to make a new fresh copy of the Time Machine backup file on the Time Capsule.

I've never had any problems with backups using this Archive method.

The target USB drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journal).....also known as HFS+. The USB port on the back of the Time Capsule tends to be low on power, so hopefully your USB drive has its own power supply.

in addition, you can Add an additional backup drive on your Mac at any time, without doing anything bad to the existing backup.

The new backup drive will be an additional stand-alone backup, and every-other backup will go to every-other drive.

You can set aside the old backup whenever you wish, or shelve it when the Time Capsule Backup function goes obsolete. The drive and its contents can be re-activated by removing the drive and placing it in an external SATA enclosure.
