Just bought new Ipad mini. Trying to back up my old ipad 5 to icoud before organising transfer of files. but the back up is saying it will take another 1 day. its already been running 20 hours.

Normal behavior if this is the first time you've backed it up to the cloud.
Connect to wifi, plug to power source, locked it and leave it alone so it can backup uninterrupted.
Seems odd. My last backup on my iPad was 4 hours ago at about 4GB. I wasn't aware it was happening, and I'm pretty sure it didn't take long.
It should be plugged in to power, on and asleep.
I think I would be tempted to stop it and start over. I'd do a forced restart, first.

This is different from a simple Power Off. I had to continue holding the button down past the "slide to power off" message, and then I released the button only after the Apple Logo appeared indicating a re-start.
