If that browsing is in Google Chrome, that may be the reason. Chrome is a notorious resource hog on Macs. Installing it also installs multiple ‘helpers’ from Google that run in the background, and their purpose is not to help you but to help Google (keep in mind that Google’s primary source of revenue is using your data to drive targeted advertising). Even if you aren’t running the Chrome app, those system extensions are always running in the background. I’d recommend deleting Chrome and all related components.

If you are looking for something other than Safari, consider Firefox or Brave (the latter is based on Chrome code but without the Google baggage).

Hi,

it's probably Chrome and this is what you can try, just before closing your laptop (if it overheats and drains the battery even when the lid is closed and your macbook is unplugged).

  • go to Chrome's "..." menu on the top-right
  • select "More Tools / Task Manager"
  • go to All Tasks tab
  • select "GPU Process" and click "End Task"

"GPU Process" will almost immediately restart, but don't worry about it. Unless you continue browsing, especially video/streaming (e.g.: youtube) you should be fine. You can also close your lid, or your CPU should cool down. Simply quitting Chrome won't solve the issue unfortunately.

I checked the battery usage and realized it was no longer charing at 80% despite the "optimize battery" being off, after the OS update.

It seems I have now fixed the issue, this is what i did:

  1. I started the computer using the startup options, and then did a Repair of the main SSD.
  2. Started again using the startup options and then launched Safe Mode (hold shift)
  3. After launching in safe mode i restarted the computer normally

I am on the 7th hour of usage and still have 50% battery, which is back to what it was before the update. And a lot better than just after the update where i would get about 4h in total.

Hope this helps.
