Apple Music on macOS does not auto-adjust sample rate / bit depth

To Apple Music Team,

I am writing to raise a concern about how Apple Music handles sample rate and bit depth on macOS.

Currently, on macOS (including Sonoma and Tahoe), Apple Music outputs audio through CoreAudio at whatever setting is configured in Audio MIDI Setup. Unlike iOS, the sample rate and bit depth are not automatically adjusted to match the native quality of each track (44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, etc.).

This means:

  • Lossless and Hi-Res tracks are resampled unnecessarily, which prevents true bit-perfect playback.
  • Users must manually change Audio MIDI settings every time they want correct playback.
  • Third-party apps such as LosslessSwitcher are required to achieve functionality that Apple Music already supports natively on iOS.

Request:

Please enable automatic sample rate and bit depth switching on macOS Apple Music, so that playback always matches the original track quality, just like it does on iPhone and iPad. This would ensure Apple Music provides consistent and true lossless playback across all Apple platforms.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,
