iOS 26 overrides automatic update preferences to On

Today, September 16, 2025, I installed iOS 26 on my iPhone 15 Pro. When it was completed, I notice that iOS 26 changed my automatic updates setting from Off to On and turned automatic downloads to On instead of my previous choice of Off. Why did Apple override my preferences? What other unwelcome/unwanted changes should I expect and have to figure out how to change back?

The same was true for iOS 18. When you installed iOS 26, you skipped over the message that says future updates will be installed automatically and told you to either go into settings and change it or tap the link to only allow Downloads without installing the update. Simply tapping Continue will change the setting to Automatic Updates like it says in the message.

I noticed the same behavior.

Just change it back and move on.
