Apple Pencil Pro Attachment in Find My

I recently bought an iPad Air with an Apple Pencil Pro. As I was trying to add my pencil to Find My, a message popped up saying "Reattach Apple Pencil - Please reattach Apple Pencil to the side of your iPad to get started". After several attempts of attaching my pencil before clicking "Add Apple Pencil" and attaching it afterwards, I still can't seem to figure out what exactly is the problem.

If your new Apple iPad Air is one of the following models:

  • 13" M2 or M3
  • 11" M2 or M3

Then it should be compatible with the Apple Pencil Pro.

With that said, please review the following article to help troubleshoot why your new Pencil is not connecting:

Finally, how Find My works with the Apple Pencil Pro is a bit different than with other Apple devices or items.

You can use Apple's Find My app to locate a missing Apple Pencil Pro, and while it's primarily designed for use with an iPad Pro (M4) or other compatible iPads, you don't necessarily need an iPad to check its last known location.

How to Locate a Missing Apple Pencil Pro Using Find My

  1. Open the Find My App on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
  2. Tap on the "Devices" Tab to see a list of your connected Apple devices.
  3. Look for your Apple Pencil Pro in the list.
  4. If it's nearby and connected, you may see an option to use Precision Finding (although I believe, since it doesn't have a U1 Ultra Wide-band chip, it may not).

If it’s not connected, Find My will show the last known location where your iPad was connected to it.

I have the iPad Air M3 11-inch model. The problem isn't that I can't use my iPad to check my Apple Pencil Pro's location. It's that I can't add my Apple Pencil Pro to the list of "Devices" in the Find My app, be it on my iPad, iPhone or Mac, due to a bug in the app which tells me to "Please reattach Apple Pencil" the moment it literally attaches to the side of my iPad.
